Readers’ Polls
This old column about John Peel, his Festive 50 poll, and his frustration with his own listeners seems relevant to the Pitchfork list. I think it’s inevitable that any widely read zine focusing on new music will have an uneasy relationship with its readers’ tastes.
It’s very interesting reading this and comparing it to the contemporary Australian equivalent, triple j’s Hottest 100. Of course most of the voters don’t know what a C90 is (a gun?) and Triple J uploads the stream right after it’s done, but for a nigh-irrelevant medium it’s a pretty significant communal event.

Honestly, the reaction to the Pitchfork list is ticking me off more than the list itself.
