It seems like Pitchfork has been paying a lot more attention to Australian artists lately and I think it’s great, hopefully the net effect will be that Australian artists start really stepping it up. There are a lot of local bands I really like but a little bit because I judge them by Australian standards, which is a whole “smartest kid in the sandpit” thing. It’s nice when they move outta the sandpit and onto the swingset, or whatever, is that where the cool kids hang out? It’s been ages since I’ve seen Recess. My favourite Melbourne band still have to be seen to really get but their new album from what little I’ve heard might change that. Bloods are still really nice though. Post-caveat: this is without getting into the complexities of exposure (which would put me onto another tangent about bands tailoring their sound for triple j, for example) and I don’t even think bands should crave the specific attention like that. But it is nice.
