Not that it’s even remotely necessary to take to task the legions of Justin Bieber or even freestyle rapper-doubters in 2012 but the criticism that Bieber’s rap over the “Otis” sample is pre-written loses some impact when viewed next to Kanye’s pre-Dark Fantasy freestyle, which conspicuously appeared on the album as a verse on “Gorgeous”. The defence that neither is a freestyle rapper and don’t have anything to prove on that ground is valid if you won’t contest that freestyling is an antiquated measure of talent in hip hop, but in that case why the fuck are they asking these folks to freestyle anyway?
