JAKE CLELAND

While the de-memorizing effects of Google and Wikipedia are for the most part not an issue now that we can carry them around in our pockets for the good of conversation and pub trivia, one area in which they remain unhelpful as a remedy is for hearing a song that sounds like another song when you can’t place the name or artist, so that when I hear Gwen Stefani’s “The Real Thing” I’m certain it sounds just like one of a dozen songs etched into my brain from a period of childhood spent around aerobics classes but where I once might’ve placed it, that knowledge seems vestigial now. The consequence is a lot of guess work and finally an unconvincing “Aha! I knew that’s what it was” finale.
