JAKE CLELAND

The Final 52.

Seven days and hundreds of suggestions later and I got a list which is even better than I hoped for. The joy in sharing bands, I find, is not only improving somebody’s life, but attaching yourself to that brand for that person, so pat yourselves on the back because you’re now intrinsically part of my taste. Surprisingly, there was very little overlap in suggestions. Three albums were mentioned twice: Iggy Pop’s The Idiot, Silver Jews’ American Water, and New York Dolls’ New York Dolls, and two were mentioned three times: Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Lou Reed’s Transformer. With no further ruminating, here’s the list:

Elliot Smith - S/T

PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?

Blur - 13

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral, My Trial

Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy

The Heartbreakers - LAMF

The Sugarcubes - Life’s Too Good

Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain

Cornershop - When I Was Born For The 7th Time

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island

The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers

Of Montreal - The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2

Fiery Furnaces - EP

Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas

Bright Eyes - Lifted Or the Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground

Panic! At The Disco - Pretty. Odd.

Big Star - Radio City

Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album

The Slits - Cut

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music

Talking Heads - Remain In Light

Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation

The National - Boxer

Maybe I’ll write 80-100 woefully uninformed words on each album as I hear them just to attempt to articulate my thoughts, which is what this whole exercise is about, but at the very least I’ll be updating the list and crossing things off as I go. This is not in chronological order either; at the start of each week I’ll just pick an album from it, because what if I end up loving The National but it takes me until next Christmas to find them? That hardly seems fair to The National. Anyway, thanks again for all your suggestions, nerds. Merry Christmas y’all.
